| Benny Wright: Motorguard Motorsport Super Sub! |
Motorguard Media posted Monday March 31, 2008.
Heading into the ninth Round of the Comp Cams Series for this season, the Motorguard Motorsport sprintcar team were still in contention for the Car Owners Championship and with their regular Series driver Garry Brazier in Sydney chasing a fifth national championship win in what is now the abandoned running of the 2008 Australian Sprintcar Title, they needed someone to fill the seat and earn them some points. Enter the Motorguard Motorsport Super Sub, Benny Wright.
It's never easy to follow in the tyre tracks of such a well-credentialed racer like Brazier, but Wright's performance to finish second in Round 9 of the Series at Archerfield on Saturday night earned him plenty of praise not only from the team but up and down the pits as well. In just his third race of the season, each of them off the bench for Brazier when he was unable to make it to Brisbane to compete, Benny stepped up to the plate when needed and almost stole the Feature race victory off eventual winner Darren Jensen on the final lap of the race. If not for lapped traffic as Benny and Darren raced side by side into turns three and four with the chequers set to wave, the ex-Casey's General Stores Maxim could well have been sitting in victory lane.
"I'm pretty proud of the way Benny drove tonight and real happy with the job he did for us." commented team owner John Weatherall. "Gee I thought he was going to pull off the win for us in those last few laps, they just ran up behind the lapped car there at the end and unfortunately he got boxed in a little and Darren got back by but hey, that's racing I guess. Second place tonight really helps us in the points, probably puts us second on the car owners ladder and there's still four races left, who knows how it will end up."
Mid-way through Saturday night's event, Wright was concerned he may miss the Dash despite winning both his Heat races after posting a slower than expected time on a difficult and greasy racetrack. His concerns were short-lived though, and finishing third in the Dash put him in a great position for the Feature. Running fourth through the opening part of the race, Benny soon found himself in second after the two leaders dropped out and despite running a 372ci motor against the 410's, he ran on the tail of Jensen throughout the rest of the race before taking the lead momentarily on the final lap.
In somewhat of a twist of fortunes, it's also an ironic situation for Wright to be in this season. This time twelve months ago, Ben was driving the family owned sprintcar and chasing the back of the #95 Maxim on his way to a very credible second place in the Series behind the Motorguard Motorsport team. Now he's in a position to possibly help them to another Series Car Owners Championship. It's no wonder the team like having him as their very own Super Sub!
